The Big Event
On a sunny afternoon in May 2006, in Mountain View, California,
Tanuka and I were blessed with a baby boy,
Aikataan (ঐকতান).
Aikataan weighed 3.575 kg (7 lb 14 oz) at birth and was 21" tall. To
everyone's delight he took after his mother in the looks department -
most people agreed that one person like me is enough to handle :-)
The Name
One of the big things when you have a baby is naming him / her. In our
case we had entrusted this task to my parents. After all, my father has
given my brother and me names that help you get first name based email ids
in most places! With our son he did not disappoint. Aikataan means concert
and is the name of a famous piece of poetry by Rabindranath Tagore.
Of course, one realises the difficulty of having a complex name being used
for small tasks at home ("Aikataan, have you brushed your teeth?"). Most
Bengalis circumvent this by having a rather easy name which is used to address
them at home. It is here that I take pride in naming our son Jishnu. Jishnu
is another name of the Hindu mythological hero Arjun and it means triumphant.
For a very long time before his birth, though, I threatened to give him the pet name
Brajalal. The details behind this are best left unsaid.
